Boy Scout Day, May 14, 2016
Boy Scout Day is an opportunity for Scouts at all levels to satisfy their science requirements for badges. These badges include the Earth Rocks and Digging into the Past Adventure badges at the Cub and Webelo levels, and the Geology Merit Badge at the Boy Scout level. These awards are available through the Boy Scouts of America and not the Friends of Dinosaur Ridge. More than 80 earth scientists and other volunteers, including certified Merit Badge Counselors, assist with the event.
Time and Place
Boy Scout Day will be held on May 14, 2016 (click here for our calendar) and as such is the first Dinosaur Discovery Day of the season. Parking will be off-site at the Bandimere Speedway overflow lot located east of C-470 and south of Alameda along S. Rooney Road. Signs will be posted. Parking is $5 per car, paid as you enter. Please do not park along Rooney Road North or West Alameda Parkway; Dinosaur Ridge is not responsible for towed or vandalized vehicles. Check-in will be located at the Dinosaur Ridge Visitor Center.
The event takes place from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. Scout groups are encouraged to pre-register. Cub Scouts and Webelos will be assigned check-in times (between 9:30 and 1:00) and should anticipate between two to four hours to complete their requirements, depending on their level of interest. Boy Scouts trying for the Geology Merit Badge meet with their Merit Badge Counselor at 8:45 a.m., to be ready to start work at 9:00 a.m. and usually complete their work in about six hours. Note that Merit Badge candidates will be assigned a Merit Badge Counselor prior to the event, and some work with their Merit Badge Counselors will likely be necessary either before or after the event.
