Friends of Dinosaur Ridge Events

July 10-14 - Summer Camp: Session 5 - Junior Paleontologists 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. This camp focuses primarily on the fossils that are found in and around the Morrison and Golden Fossil Areas.  Your campers will explore, observe, map, draw, and measure dinosaur bones and tracks, fossil palm fronds and other plant impressions, and a plethora of other local fossils and prehistoric evidence to learn more about prehistoric Colorado. Ages 8-12. Registration information. Contact: Erin LaCount – tours@dinoridge.org

July 17-21 - Summer Camp: Session 6 - Fossils and Fun  9 a.m. – 3 p.m. This camp is a great introduction to the geology, paleontology, and ecology of Dinosaur Ridge and the surrounding areas.  Hands-on activities will help campers learn about the ancient environments, landscapes, and the animals of Colorado’s prehistoric Front Range. August 12 - DDD-Reptiles and Birds Day (Saturday) 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Join the Friends of Dinosaur Ridge and several special guests to explore the relationship between dinosaurs and their cousins the reptiles, and their descendants the birds! At the Visitor Center: Wild Wings will be here with live raptors (hawks, falcons, and owls), and the Denver Zoo will be here displaying many awesome reptiles such as snakes, lizards, turtles! Other special guests include the Morrison Natural History Museum, and more! On the Ridge: Scientists will be stationed along the trail to interpret the fossil and geological sites to visitors that hike up. Hiking is free. An optional shuttle ride will be available at a cost of $4/person (3 and under free). For more information, contact: Erin LaCount - tours@dinoridge.org. Alameda over the ridge will be closed to bicyclists for this event between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

September 9 – Discovery Day: Geocaching! (Saturday). 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Geocaching is a great activity done with family and friends! Utilizing GPS coordinates, there are small canisters, boxes, crates, etc. hidden in unique locations! Dinosaur Ridge Visitor Center and along the Ridge trail features many Geocaches as well as several Earthcaches. GPS devices are available to rent from the USGS during the event. Hands on activities will be at the Visitor Center. Contact: Erin LaCount – tours@dinoridge.org.

September 9-17 - Denver Coliseum Mineral, Fossil, and Gem Show 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Dinosaur Ridge will have a booth every day during this fossil and gem show. Stop in and say hi! Located at the Denver Coliseum – Brighton Blvd and I-70.

September 15-17 - Denver Gem and Mineral Show 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Dinosaur Ridge will have a hands-on informative booth at this Gem and Mineral show. Stop by and say hi! Located at the Denver Mart (formerly the Merchandise Mart) – 58th and I-25.

September 27 – Everything Dinosaur: Talk 9 – Ceratopsians (Wednesday) 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. Join the Friends of Dinosaur Ridge an interesting talk on horned dinosaurs, the ceratopsians! Meeting place: Dinosaur Discovery Center: 17681 W Alameda Parkway, Red Rocks Entrance #1. FREE TALK. Tours@dinoridge.org to RSVP.

October 14 - Discovery Day: Girl Scout Day/National Fossil Day (Saturday) 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Girl Scouts of all levels can earn badge requirements. Girl Scout registration information will be posted as soon as the event is finalized. We’ll also be celebrating National Fossil Day with the National Park Service and many other special guests! Hands-on activities at the Visitor Center for all ages, and scientists will be along the Ridge interpreting fossils and geology for all attendees. Public welcome!
