January 16, 2015 (Friday) – Deadline for the Winter issue of Ridge Report

January 18th (Sunday), 12PM, Potluck Lunch & "DINOSTAMPEDE" viewing. On January 18 at the Discovery Center, the Florissant Scientific Society will be having a potluck lunch at 12:00 and then watch "DINOSTAMPEDE," a movie starring our own Martin Lockley and other dinosaur trackers around the world as they unravel the mystery of the Lark Quarry tracksite in Australia. March 25th Lecture: Long-Necked Dinosaurs (Wednesday) 7PM Join us for an evening lecture on sauropods, long-necked dinosaurs! Have you ever wondered what makes them so unique? March 30th Training: Exhibit Areas (Monday10AM-12PM Join us for a volunteer training for our two exhibit areas! From 10-11AM we will go through Trek Through Time at the Main Visitor Center (east side), and from 11-12:00 we will go through the Discovery Center Exhibits (west side). If you have never volunteered with us before this is a great way to get your foot in the door and start easy if rocks and fossils aren't your background! RSVP with Amber at amber_cain@dinoridge.org

May 27th Lecture: Strange and Different Toothed Dinosaurs (Wednesday) 7PM Join us for an evening lecture on heterodonts, a strange group of dinosaurs with really weird teeth! Some dinosaurs are very unique, and with the largest of this group only 1.5-feet tall and 4-feet long, these little guys get overlooked too easily. Not tonight! Come on over this evening to see a presentation done by Erin LaCount on how unique heterodonts are in the dinosaur world! June 22-26th Summer Camp: Junior Geologists 9AM-3PM This camp will focus on the local rocks and formations of Colorado’s Front Range, as well as what we can learn from rocks and minerals.  With interactives and hands-on activities, campers will get a chance to explore, experiment, observe, measure, collect and even mine rocks and minerals to help them visualize and learn about Earth materials. Though they’re not directly related to ducks, come learn about the unique traits these dinosaurs had that set them apart from others that lived during the Cretaceous. October 10, 2015 (Saturday) DDD-National Fossil Day as part of Earth Science Week. Also International Astronomy Day and International Archaeology Day. 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

October 28th Lecture: Bone-Headed Dinosaurs (Wednesday) 7PM Join us for an evening lecture on thick-skulled dinosaurs, the pachycephalosaurs (pack-ee-seff-uh-low-sores). Kids have been able to say that dinosaur name for eons, yet it always tricks up us older folks. Learn not only how to pronounce this and other awkward dino names, but also everything about these strange-looking, bone-headed dinosaurs! November 25th Lecture: Non-Dinosaur Reptiles (Wednesday) 7PM Join us for an evening lecture on critters that often times get mixed up and called dinosaurs, even though they aren’t. Learn about flying and swimming reptiles, crocodilians and their relatives, and how these animals certainly aren’t dinosaurs even though they were alive at the same time. Come on over this evening to see a presentation done by Erin LaCount on dinosaur cousins and other non-dinosaurian reptiles! Learn about the mammals that coexisted with the largest animals to walk the earth and see which ones survived the extinction event at the end of the Cretaceous to evolve into some of the most impressive living things to date!
